2010 Guest Soloist

Philippe Jaroussky

Philippe Jaroussky is the most prominent French countertenor to have emerged from the turn-of-the-21st century era. His focus has largely been on early music, in particular the works of Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Handel and many lesserknown eventeenth- and eighteenth-century composers. He has appeared and recorded extensively with his own early music instrumental ensemble, Artaserse, as well as with the leading conductors associated with early and baroque music, including Jean-Claude Malgoire, René Jacobs and Marc Minkowski. Originally an accomplished violinist, Jaroussky switched to voice studies in 1996 with Nicole Fallien. His first major debut at the 1999 Royaumont and Ambronay Festivals in France was in Alessandro Scarlatti’s little-known oratorio Sedecia. A year later he sang in a tour of Monteverdi’s three great operas with La Grande Écurie et la Chambre du Roy.

In 2001 Jaroussky had major appearances all over France and abroad: he performed Arbace in Vivaldi’s opera Catone in Utica under Malgoire, and in the following years won high praise for performances of Vivaldi’s Nisi Dominus, the Pergolesi Stabat Mater and Handel’s Agrippina. He made sensational operatic debuts in 2005 at the Berlin State Opera as Telemaco in Monteverdi’s Ulisse with René Jacobs, and at the Flanders Opera in Handel’s Rinaldo under the direction of Andreas Spering. Philippe Jaroussky’s meteoric rise continued in 2005 with a triumphant performance in the title role of Rinaldo in Paris. A 2006 highlight was the program he dedicated to the castrato Carestini with French baroque ensemble Le Concert d’Astrée. In February 2007, at just twenty-nine years of age, Philippe Jaroussky received the Opera Singer of the Year award at the Victoires de la Musique Classique. His recording of Vivaldi Heroes went gold in France, selling nearly 75,000 copies. His 2007 engagements included the role of Tolomeo in Handel’s Giulio Cesare, the title role of Landi’s Sant’Alessio under the direction of William Christie and Dido and Aeneas under the direction of Marc Minkowski.
