The Brandenburg Experience

At the Brandenburg we invite you to discover beautiful histories.
The experience is ‘wonderful’, ‘magical’ and ‘extraordinary’.

How do we inspire such feelings?
By bringing to life the original colours of baroque and classical masterpieces with the gorgeous sound of instruments from the period. Our masterpieces include works from well known composers like Bach, Vivaldi and Mozart, and from those lesser known, like Zelenka, Corrette and Merula. Our instruments include the harpsichord, theorbo and lirone, and in 2012 we will also showcase the sounds of the basset
clarinet and the keyed trumpet. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never heard of these instruments, because the music we make is beautiful and joyful.

Under the charismatic leadership of the Brandenburg’s founder and Artistic Director Paul Dyer, we feature the finest period musicians from around Australia. From our very first concert in the Sydney Opera House to a sold out London Proms performance that had ‘everyone roaring for more’, we continue to achieve artistic excellence at the highest level. As a member of the Australia Council’s Major Performing Arts Group and winner of 5 ARIA awards for Best Classical Album, we have become a leading voice in the Australian cultural landscape.

“…what stands out at concert after concert is the impression that this bunch of musicians is having
a really good time. They look at each other and smile, they laugh…there’s a warmth and sense of fun not
often associated with classical performance.”
— Sydney Morning Herald

Each year we invite an exciting group of guest artists from Australia and overseas to help us bring to life the
music of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Previous guests on the Brandenburg stage have included French countertenor Philippe Jaroussky, London based fortepianist Kristian Beuzuidenhout, American soprano Cyndia Sieden, Australian recorder player Genevieve Lacey and many more.

If you would like to hear our sound, you can visit our website, listen to ABC Classic FM, buy one of our 16 recordings on the ABC Classics label, or experience a live concert at Sydney’s City Recital Hall Angel Place, the Melbourne Recital Centre, and in regional venues around Australia.

If you would like to discover more behind the Beautiful Histories + Brandenburg Visions we'll be presenting in 2012, request a brochure or explore our season online. And if you’re wondering about our name? It comes from The Brandenburg Concertos written in 1721 by a musical genius named J.S.Bach.

In February 2012 we invite you to discover the Brandenburg experience in Venice Secrets, a concert festive end of year treat featuring divine musical delights from across the world and across the ages, brought to life by the soaring voices of our Brandenburg Choir accompanied on period instruments.
