The Inspiration behind our 2012 Season

A Message from Artistic Director Paul Dyer

Imagine discovering a Caravaggio hidden away for centuries. You lift it up and see, somewhere underneath the dust and darkened image, the faint flicker of a beautiful history. You carefully brush away at the painting and slowly the colours of this 17th century masterpiece reveal themselves – rich, earthy and vibrant shades that evoke joy and wonder. You are faced with a painted vision unlike anything you have seen, and your first thought is to share it with the world.

This is the feeling I have when I discover period music and bring it to the Brandenburg stage. For our audiences, I hope each performance is a revelation of a beautiful history painted in notes. Instead of Old Masters like Caravaggio, Vermeer and Rembrandt, we seek inspiration from Bach, Vivaldi and Mozart. In 2012, we reveal a masterpiece unlike any other. Our very own restoration of one of the earliest operas ever written, MONTEVERDI'S L'ORFEO.

It has always been my dream to bring a spectacular period drama to life, and Monteverdi’s tragic love story is perfect as our very first opera. Performed in a concert setting, L’Orfeo represents one of the most important milestones in Brandenburg history. It will be a moment of extraordinary beauty.

This jewel of the late Renaissance is one of six concerts in our 2012 subscription season. Subscribers will also discover an exquisite collection of VENICE SECRETS with an Italian maestro on the period violin, the gorgeous choral splendour of BACH ETERNAL with our incredible Choir, the joyful sound of the keyed trumpet in DAZZLING VIRTUOSO, the sublime virtuosity of a Mozart clarinet in BEAUTIFUL MINDS, and the magnificent sound of a Brandenburg Christmas in NOE
L! NOEL!.

These are the beautiful histories that await you. Please enjoy exploring our season.
