The Brandenburg Choir

The Brandenburg Choir has become renowned for its astonishing vocal blend and technical virtuosity. Established by Artistic Director Paul Dyer in 1999 to perform in the first-ever Noël! Noël! Brandenburg Christmas concert, the Choir has become a regular part of the Brandenburg year and starred to great acclaim in the 2006 series Magnificent Mozart.

“The Brandenburg Choir was polished and responsive, powerfully conveying the work’s celebratory magnificence in their full-voiced climaxes sung in unison.”

“The power of the human voice was well known to the great baroque and classical composers. For the Brandenburg to bring to life all aspects of period music, it was crucial to put together a choir of magnificent singers to add to our rich complement of period instruments. Our Choir is a ravishing blend of radiant voices”, says Paul Dyer.

The Choir’s voices include a blending of soprano, male alto, tenor and bass, and are often joined by the sounds of boy trebles, resulting in a distinctly different sound to other Australian choirs. For this 2008 concert series the Choir will perform with 50 boy trebles selected from various Sydney schools.

“The choir and orchestra were at their best, giving an elated performance, deserving of every bit of the foot-stamping, cheering ovation.”
The Sydney Morning Herald

The current twenty-four members of the Brandenburg Choir are all professional singers, but they do not all sing fulltime. From music teachers to lawyers, business managers to medical doctors and nurses, each Choir member looks forward to the opportunity to come together to perform these spectacular vocal concerts.

The Choir has attained unprecedented popularity, reaching thousands of listeners throughout Australia on ABC radio. Bach cantatas, Handel’s Coronation Anthems and Mozart’s great Coronation Mass are among their best-loved performances. In Handel’s Ode for St Cecilia’s Day the Choir received critical acclaim, with The Sydney Morning Herald saying: “[The Brandenburg Choir is] one of the finest choruses one could put together in this town.”

The Choir can also be heard in the Brandenburg’s ever-popular CD Noël! Noël!, which was recorded live at the City Recital Hall Angel Place in 2001.
