ABO Versailles Concert: The king’s passions: the music and art of Versailles

The Brandenburg Ensemble performs music by Mondonville, Leclair, Quentin le Jeune and Muffat, bringing to life the architectural beauty and art of Chateau Versailles which will be accompanied by imagery of the art and the architecture of the Chateau.

King Louis XIV transferred the seat of French government to Versailles in 1682 and in doing so created a magnificent palace that was regarded throughout Europe as the pinnacle of architectural style and beauty.  The extensive influence of Chateau Versailles went beyond the sumptuous scale and beauty of the palace itself to include inspirational art and music.  Louis XIV adored the creative arts and to showcase their beauty he utilised the galleries and salons of Chateau Versailles for frequent performances of music, theatre and dance.  French baroque music emerged as a dominant and lasting influence but such music could perhaps not have been created were it not for the majesty of the art of the Chateau Versailles itself, surrounding the King and his court.

$65, $60 concession, $55 NGA members, $30 under 30
