Financial Accountant
Applications close COB 23 January 2026
Australian Brandenburg Orchestra | Full-time | $110,000 to $120,000 + super | Mascot (free parking)
This is not just a transactional accounting role. The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra is looking for a Financial Accountant who can own the financial engine of the organisation and turn accurate, disciplined processing into clear, decision-ready reporting for senior management, the Board and external stakeholders.
Yes — the role includes accounts payable and payroll, but that is only the starting point.
The real responsibility is understanding the story behind the numbers, explaining it clearly, and ensuring the organisation is always audit-ready and well governed.
The role
Reporting to the CFO and Managing Director, you will initially operate in a standalone finance role, with accounts payable and payroll support available once you are established.
You will be trusted with the full finance cycle — from processing through to interpretation, reporting and external accountability — in a highly visible role with genuine influence.
What you’ll be doing:
- Owning day-to-day financial processing in Xero, including invoices, payroll, accounts payable and reconciliations.
- Preparing monthly management accounts against a board-approved and rolling budget.
- Producing clear, concise Board financial reports (quarterly).
- Preparing financial reports and acquittals for government funding bodies (quarterly).
- Managing the flow of information to external auditors and ownership of the annual audit process and compilation of the Annual Report.
- Maintaining strong financial controls, documentation and processes.
- Explaining financial results, variances and risks to non-finance stakeholders in plain English.
About you
You are comfortable in the detail, but you do not stop there.
You bring:
- Strong hands-on experience with Xero.
- Solid experience processing payroll and accounts payable.
- A basic understanding of GST and BAS requirements, with the ability to work confidently within established settings and processes (no tax experience required).
- The ability to read, interpret and explain financial statements.
- Experience working with external auditors and audit preparation.
- The confidence to work independently and take ownership.
- Completed or working towards completing CA or CPA (highly regarded, not essential).
Why this role stands out
- $110,000 to $120,000 + super.
- Full-time, office-based role in Mascot with free parking, with work-from-home flexibility once established in the role.
- Direct exposure to senior leadership, Board reporting and external stakeholders.
- Professional development support and a genuine stepping-stone to a Head of Business / senior finance role once mastered.
The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra is one of Australia’s most respected performing arts organisations, operating in a complex, highly accountable environment with strong governance and national visibility.
For someone who wants a role where the numbers matter, the reporting matters, and the work is seen and relied on at the highest level, this role will feel like the right next step.
